Programme
Day 1
We start our journey from Paramaribo and head west. Our first stop is Groningen, the capital of the district of Saramacca. It lies on the river of the same name and was once the location of a fort and a leper colony on the other side of the river.
In the past, Dutch farmers from the area around Groningen (the Netherlands) unsuccessfully tried to settle here. In 1945 a monument was erected in memory of these farmers. The farmers, also called "boeroes", still form a small group of people in Suriname.
From Groningen we continue to the coconut district of Coronie. On the way we see palm trees, wooden houses and small white churches. Once in Nieuw-Nickerie we go to the market and the sea dike to see them. If there is not enough time, we save this for the next day.
We then go to the place where the boat is already waiting to take us to Bigi Pan. Here we will spend the night at the accommodation on the water.
Day 2
On the second day we leave Bigi Pan again after lunch. The morning programme also leaves room to relax a little. If there was not enough time on day 1 to see everything in Nieuw-Nickerie, there is room for it today. After this we continue our way back to Paramaribo.
