Early in the morning you leave for the district of Commewijne for a tour full of culture, nature and history. Plantation Reynsdorp (Bakkie), founded by Nicolaas Reynsdorp in 1744, was once a flourishing coffee plantation and still contains old sluices and buildings. Museum Bakkie houses one of the most remarkable private collections in Suriname, with original books, prints, maps and other objects. On arrival you are welcomed by Bas Spek, the developer, and Marsha Mormon, a descendant of the plantation.
The journey starts at 8:00 a.m. by bus from Paramaribo to Mon Tresor, in the district of Commewijne. From there we cross by covered wooden boat to Plantation Bakkie. Food and drinks are provided on the plantation, and you get the chance to explore the botanical garden of the old plantation. During the tour you will be told which herbs grow there and what their medicinal properties are. You can also visit the small but unique museum, where you can admire special objects, including the purchase contracts of slave owners from 1863.
